Biography
Phil Doherty
Personal Objective:
To live and work according to my core values of being a part of the universe, with rights & responsibilities towards my loved ones, family, community, all of humanity and the natural world. To be an active individual, who is thoughtful about clarity of purpose, action, progress, co-operation & understanding and by so doing, make a significant contribution to the world.
Community Engagement:
Formerly a steering committe member for the Whangarei Committee Web Directory project, Co-convenor of the Whangarei Anti Racism Coalition, Member of the Greenpeace New Zealand membership committee, part of the voting assembly. Member of Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. Editor of www.context.co.nz a participatory democracy alternative media site.
Work experience :
Currently the district manager for Victim Support (www.victimsupport.org.nz)in Northland (New Zealand). Victim Support is a non-government organisation, core funded by the Ministry of Justice. Victim Support has two primary objectives: To provide information, support and assistance to individual victims, witnesses, their families and friends. And to raise public awareness and recognition of the effects of crime and promote victim's rights.
We provide 24-hour emotional support, personal advocacy and information to all people affected by crime and trauma throughout New Zealand. By striving to meet these objectives we aim to provide a comprehensive, flexible service to reduce the effects of crime and trauma. Our Vision is that Victims of crime and trauma, well supported, safe and in control of restoring their lives.
Prior to working for Victim Support. A freelance web-publisher and small-scale beef farmer. Web-publishing clients include www.knowledge-basket.co.nz and development work for a community web directory for the city of Whangarei and for the district's public health organisation.
2.5 years (May 2001 to September 2003), the Information Services Programme Manager at the Development Resource Centre
( www.dev-zone.org ) in PSA House, Aurora Tce, Wellington.
6.5 years (1992 till 1999) General Co-ordinator of Emergency Humanitarian Aid with Medecins Sans Frontieres, Doctors Without Borders. An International humanitarian organisation, www.msf.org or www.dwb.org.
- Specialist in context analysis, and general co-ordination of natural disaster response and emergency preparedness planning.
- Country representative co-ordinator of emergency medical relief teams in Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Northwestern Somalia.
- Headquarters emergency manager for Central African Great Lakes region (Rwanda, Zaire/Congo & Congo-Brazzaville) in 1996/7.
- Emergency assessments in Afghanistan and Chechnya in 1995.
- Logistician in Bosnia throughout 1993.
4.5 years (1987 till 1992) with Greenpeace. Radio operator at World Park Base in Antarctica and on 3 ships. Campaigned in 15 countries including being at Mururoa in 1992.
10 years (1978 till 1988) Biomedical engineering at the Auckland University School of Medicine.
4 years (1973 till 1977) TV broadcasting, Radio Servicing and applied science (Scott Base, Antarctica).
Education
Master of International Relations at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) New Zealand, 2000. Merit Pass.
Thesis: A Critical Comparison of the Defence Policies of Australia and New Zealand.
Research topics:
Conflict resolution non-government organisations: Legitimacy and Accountability. The humanitarianism in post-cold war humanitarian interventions.
