Amping for something to do this summer? Come to Activism in Aotearoa!
For those of you unfamiliar with Activism in Aotearoa, there have been three so far - the first in 1995, and two consecutively in 1997 and 1998, all out at the lovely sunniness of Wainuiomata...
Activism in Aotearoa was conceptualised out of the 1993 Peace, Power and Politics Conference and is about educating and empowering young people and activists from all over New Zealand with a range of skills, training and issues of what activism is about, and what it could be. It's a chance for people from all walks of life and activism to come together, create and build new and stronger networks, eat yummy food and generally have a good time.
So; in the face of New Zealand's military support for America's so-called 'war against terrorism', eviction notices for people on Wellington's upper Cuba Street (with bulldozers looming), governmental acceptance of the GE monster into our environment, continued global dominance by corporate multinationals and the general branding of our everyday existence - let's get organised - come stretch your talents and learn the art of activism!
The conference will be held from the 8th-10th of February 2001 at the Brookfield Outdoor Education Centre, Moores Valley Rd., Wainuiomata (just out of Wellington).
Some of the topics covered in the seminars and workshops will include: facilitation & group dynamics, conflict resolution, youth, networking/activism, police & civil rights, banner-making, non-violent direct action, queer activism, public speaking, media, biculturalism/Treaty of Waitangi, peace issues, G.E campaign, anti-bypass campaign (Wgtn), spirituality, cultural work, women & activism, international solidarity/globalisation and networking/movement building.
